The Village of Deerfield board of trustees held its regular meeting Nov. 2.
The trustees opened the meeting with an official farewell and thank you to Walt Trillhaase, who is retiring after 26 years as police commander. Trillhaase was the department's first accreditation officer in addition to holding many other positions within the department. Trillhaase had been commander since 2005.
Chief John Sliozis then swore in Trillhaase's replacement, Greg Hury.
The board's public hearing on its $58,000,796 budget was filled with discussion among trustees on the proposed budget raising of vehicle sticker fees for seniors. Trustee William Seiden motioned to amend the budget to remove the price hike, but the motion was voted down by the remaining trustees and the ordinance to adopt the budget in its current form went through its first reading.
Following a trend among local governments around the state, the board approved a resolution urging state lawmakers to release the funds from the motor fuel tax and other sources owed to local governments. The funds have been withheld due to the state's budget impasse.
Meanwhile, towns and villages have been attempting to write balanced budgets for the coming year without millions of dollars of expected revenue to count on. Mayor Harriet Rosenthal said he had lunch with state officials before the board of trustees meeting and was not given any reason to expect the funds in the near future.
