Illinois State House District 60 issued the following announcement on Dec. 9

The College of Lake County was selected to receive 1.5 million in funding via the Illinois Community College Board Workforce Equity Initiative. The project is designed to create, support and expand short-term workforce training opportunities in high need areas. Made possible by the leadership of State Representative Rita Mayfield and the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus, the grant is designed to help students quickly prepare for in demand careers and promote diversity.

The project provides wrap-around services including financial assistance and academic support to participating students. Its goal is to quickly prepare students for entry into the workforce in high paying fields. Curriculum areas include administrative management technology, auto collision repair, HVAC technology, forklift operations, truck driving, certified nursing assistant, dental assistant, healthcare office assistant and phlebotomy.

“The College of Lake County has been awarded a $1.5M grant from ICCB to provide transformational opportunities for individuals in North Chicago, Waukegan, Round Lake and Zion,” said Chairman Torri Newsome. ““This is the most awesome opportunity our students and our community have had in years.”

These are fields which are in demand and provide solid salaries for new entrants. Some of the programs provide a certificate upon completion which can be done in a single semester. This is an opportunity for people seeking to find a path to good employment and is of clear benefit to area business and our community.

“Education is the foundation of healthy futures and vibrant communities,” said State Representative Rita Mayfield. “Fighting for the people of our community is at the heart of what I do as State Representative. I appreciate my colleagues who worked to help make this possible.”

The program is accepting students and the grant contacts are Ali O’Obrien, VP of Community & Workforce Partnerships at aobrien@clcillinois.edu, or 847-543-2409 and Jesus Ruiz, Dean of Lakeshore Campus, jruiz20@clcillinois.edu, 847-543-2113.
