Jim Carris, a candidate for Illinois' Tenth Congressional District, wished his constituents "Feliz Cinco de Mayo!" Carris, who is set to challenge incumbent Democrat Brad Schneider, took the opportunity to explain the significance of the day.

"Feliz Cinco de Mayo," said Carris, according to Facebook. "Cinco de Mayo commemorates a single battle - the date of the Mexican army's May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. In the U.S., Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations."

In a continuation of his statement on Facebook, Carris wrote, "The 10th Congressional District is home to over 130,000 Mexican residents. Consider learning more about traditional Mexican cuisine and patronizing a restaurant in your community, supporting local Mexican-owned businesses, or attending local cultural events like parades today!"

Contrary to its observance in the United States, Cinco de Mayo is not a nationwide holiday in Mexico. As History.com notes, the day is "primarily observed in the state of Puebla, where Zaragoza’s unlikely victory occurred, although other parts of the country also take part in the celebration." Some Mexicans who celebrate may include recreations of the Battle of Puebla as part of their traditions. However, for many it’s just a normal day since it's not a federal holiday and businesses remain open. In the US context, Chicano activists began raising awareness about this day's importance during the 1960s. Importantly though, it should not be confused with Mexican Independence Day which is celebrated on September 16 annually.

Carris has established himself as a prominent figure within Lake County's business community and has been a resident there for many years. His campaign website highlights his extensive business background rather than any political career.

"Jim has spent his life in business, not politics; practicing law, running his own company and as a corporate leader," reads his campaign website.

Carris currently holds influential positions at Colliers International as Managing Principal, Executive Managing Director and Market Leader. He financed his own education by taking on various jobs including painting houses and bartending. This showcases an exemplary work ethic that has driven him throughout his life.

The 10th District, currently represented by incumbent Democrat U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider, spans multiple municipalities in Lake County, Cook County and McHenry County.
