A ceremonial groundbreaking on June 6 marked the commencement of construction on the Bangs Lake Outfall Improvements Project in Wauconda, Illinois. The project aims to mitigate flooding affecting over 70 properties and eight roads in the area.
According to a news release, the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission (SMC), the Lake County Board, and the Village of Wauconda celebrated this milestone with a ceremony. The Bangs Lake outfall encompasses 6,450 feet of storm sewer and channels, extending from Phil’s Beach to IL Route 176. The project will also complete nearly 4,000 feet of stream improvements and introduce new infrastructure including a lake outfall structure, retaining wall, storm sewer, and box culverts.
The release said that these efforts will help manage high water levels at Bangs Lake by upgrading its outfall control structure and related infrastructure. Previously, bars were manually added or removed from the outfall gate; however, the new system allows for remote monitoring and management of lake levels. The project is anticipated to have positive environmental effects by improving lake and stream ecosystems’ health. Stabilizing streambanks will reduce erosion and sediment buildup while planting native vegetation is expected to enhance water quality and support ecological balance.
Existing infrastructure components have reportedly reached their end of life. Flooding has been a recurring issue in several streets and areas of Wauconda during heavy rain events, leading to road closures on 40 occasions in recent years. Over the past decade, flooding has affected local homes up to 15 times annually.
The project received $2.5 million in partial funding through an Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) grant. The Village of Wauconda contributed $266,387 towards this initiative. Funds from a $122 million appropriation by DCEO are allocated to support regional stormwater initiatives aimed at reducing flooding and enhancing infrastructure in severely impacted communities. From 2022 to 2024, SMC completed 13 projects funded by an initial $30 million from this appropriation. The Bangs Lake project is among 16 projects financed by an additional $30 million from DCEO. Other upcoming projects are planned for Buffalo Grove, Highland Park, North Chicago, Round Lake Beach, and Zion.
