Residents of Barrington and other communities within the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) will have an opportunity to participate in a document shredding event on Saturday, October 18, from 9 a.m. to noon. The event will take place at the Metra North Commuter Lot, located at 201 S. Spring Street near Wool Street and Klingenberg Lane.

Only residents from SWANCC member communities are eligible for the document destruction service. Identification will be checked to verify residency. Each vehicle is limited to six file boxes or paper bags of documents for shredding, and all plastic and metal clips or binders must be removed beforehand. “Materials will not be accepted from non-SWANCC residents, businesses, schools, or institutions,” according to event organizers. Those unsure about their eligibility can visit SWANCC’s website or call (847) 724-9205 for more information.

The recycling event does not include electronics. Residents seeking electronic waste disposal can arrange curbside pickup by contacting Groot at (800) 244-1977.

Textile recycling will also be available at the event with no residency requirement. Participants may bring unwanted clothing, shoes, household and kitchen items, accessories, and toys for recycling purposes. Items that cannot be accepted include furniture, wet or moldy clothing, electronics, paints, cleaners or liquids, and mattresses. A full list of acceptable items is available on the Village of Barrington’s website at www.barrington-il.gov/recycling.

Additionally, a food drive will be held during the event to benefit the Barrington Township and Cuba Township Food Pantries. Attendees are encouraged to bring non-expired, non-perishable food items to help fill a Public Works Truck with donations; cash contributions are also welcomed but not required.
