The Buffalo Grove Police Department announced on Mar. 30 that it will increase patrols in April as part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The department is joining the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police, and other local law enforcement agencies to focus on distracted driving violations throughout the month.
This initiative aims to address the risks associated with distracted driving, which can lead to serious accidents and injuries. By increasing enforcement, officials hope to remind drivers about the dangers of using electronic devices while behind the wheel.
Motorists should expect more officers monitoring for activities such as texting, using social media, or watching videos while driving. “Distracted driving puts everyone at risk, and even a quick glance at a phone can have devastating consequences,” said BGPD Commander Jon Officer. “During the month of April, officers will be looking for distracted driving violations and reminding motorists to put the phone away and focus on the road.”
The police advise drivers who need to send messages or check directions to pull over safely before doing so. Using an electronic communication device manually while driving is not only unsafe but also against Illinois law.
The campaign is supported by federal traffic safety funds administered by IDOT. Authorities encourage all motorists to avoid distractions and help make roads safer during Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
