The Buffalo Grove Police Department announced on March 12 a special traffic safety campaign for St. Patrick’s Day, running from March 13 to March 23 in partnership with the Illinois State Police and Illinois Department of Transportation.
The campaign aims to remind drivers about the dangers of impaired driving and increase safety on local roads during a period known for celebrations. With St. Patrick’s Day falling on a Tuesday this year, police expect festivities throughout the week and surrounding weekends.
“With St. Patrick’s Day falling on a Tuesday this year, we expect celebrations throughout the entire week, plus the weekends before and after,” said Deputy Chief Tara Anderson. “We urge everyone to celebrate responsibly. Plan ahead for a sober ride home before you leave the house — your safety and the safety of others depend on it.”
During this enforcement period, officers will focus on identifying drivers impaired by alcohol, cannabis, or other drugs—including prescription medications that may affect driving ability. The department will also increase seat belt checks, especially at night when usage rates are lower, and strictly enforce speeding, distracted driving, and all other traffic laws.
Police encourage partygoers and hosts alike to prioritize safety by ensuring designated drivers are sober and reminding everyone that walking or biking while impaired can also be dangerous. Designated drivers are advised to watch out for impaired pedestrians who may not follow street signs.
The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Drive High. Get a DUI” campaigns are funded by federal traffic safety funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and administered by IDOT.
The department urges residents to call 911 if they see an impaired driver on the road or help friends find safe rides home if needed.
