Coal City Community Unit School District 1 has welcomed its youngest students back to school for the new academic year. Early childhood students have started learning classroom routines, getting to know their classmates, and understanding the rules of both the school and playground. Over the past week, they have also been introduced to various classroom tools.

Pre-kindergarten teacher Mrs. Villafuerte said, “we are so excited for another fun school year!”

The district serves Grundy and Will counties and includes Coal City Early Childhood Center, Coal City Elementary School, Coal City High School, Coal City Intermediate School, and Coal City Middle School (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/). According to the Illinois State Board of Education, there are 153 teachers in the district with an average salary of $69,297 before pension contributions; 77.9 percent are women and 22.1 percent are men. The data also shows that no teachers had more than ten absences in a school year (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/).

Demographically, the student body is made up of 86.9 percent White students, 0.6 percent Black students, 9.6 percent Hispanic students, and 0.6 percent Asian students (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/). In terms of finances, the district spent $21,619 per student in 2020 for a total expenditure of $47,021,825 (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/).
