District 10 congressional challenger Morgan Coghill said that while school funding and curriculum concerns are minimal in Northeast Illinois, he is more concerned about underfunded districts elsewhere, noting that local education standards vary based on community needs and resources, which can affect student preparedness for higher education.
“Reality in Northeast Illinois—this isn’t really an issue,” said Coghill on the Lake Forest podcast. “Reality in Northeast Illinois—this isn’t really an issue. Where I get more concerned about is that you’ve got school districts, especially in Texas, that are only going to school four days a week because of funding shortfalls. And you’re going to have kids who, you know, are learning questionable things in science classes, who want to be doctors.
“If someone going to one of those schools wants to go to the University of Illinois in pre-med, do they have to take an extra class, an extra test?” said Coghill. “For sort of overall framework standards—but a lot of that is decided, should be decided, on the local level. My first high school, you know, there was a large ag component as electives, because a lot of these kids were farmers, or, you know, there was also lumber and timber.”
