During coyote mating season in Illinois, which peaks in February and extends from late January through March, there is a noticeable increase in coyote activity. The animals become more vocal and territorial as they search for mates and establish dens. This period typically lasts four to six weeks.

Local authorities advise residents to closely supervise their pets during this time, as coyotes may be more defensive of their territory. “Plenty of coyotes call Lake County home, so please be sure you keep a close eye on your pets,” the statement reads.

The following precautions are recommended: do not let pets outside unsupervised, always keep them on a leash when walking, avoid feeding coyotes or other wildlife, and use loud noises to scare off any coyotes that are encountered.
