District 10 congressional challenger Morgan Coghill said he discussed ideas such as universal background checks, potential liability for unsecured firearms, and training, and he noted concerns about the accessibility of guns to children.

“I think that there needs to be better rules on handguns,” said Coghill on the Lake Forest podcast. “You know, universal background checks are one. I think that if, you know, your gun is taken because you didn’t have it secured properly, and, you know, a kid kills himself or his friend, you know, you should be liable for that. I think there should be better training.”

“I grew up around guns,” said Coghill. “Everybody had one, and they were treated as, you know, a tool. And, you know, we had bears. Everybody had, you know, mostly shotguns and rifles. Everybody. One hot thing: I think the carelessness with which a lot of guns are stored, used, and made accessible—especially to kids—that’s criminal and should, you know, be punished more than it is. And I think there needs to be better training for it.”
