District 10 congressional challenger Morgan Coghill said that education requirements are generally consistent, that academic standards are set at the local level, and that some communities depend on federal education funding because local property tax bases are not sufficient to fully support schools.
“In terms of local, you know, curricula there are some pretty general, broad things,” said Coghill on the Lake Forest podcast. “You’ve got to take, what, three years of English, four years of math in high school to graduate, etc. But all of those standards are made locally. And let us not forget that most, you know, I mean, where we are is—you know it—let’s be honest, that’s a pretty rich area now by U.S. standards.”
“There are entire states that are entirely dependent on the U.S. Department of Education for their funding,” said Coghill. “So getting rid of it now, that doesn’t seem to be the way to go. You know, where I grew up, something like 60% of the budget was in—you know—the local property tax base wasn’t big enough to support it. So there was a lot of federal help. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have had a school.”
