District 10 congressional challenger Morgan Coghill said that after taking temporary work at his father’s car dealership, he observed younger technicians gaining specialized training, earning good incomes, and avoiding debt, which led him to reflect on his own career path and student loan choices.

“My dad said, Look, we got some odd jobs around the dealership, you know, parking cars, doing paperwork, you know, just scut work,” said Coghill on the Lake Forest podcast. “So I said, sure, I’ll pick up a few hours while I’m searching for, you know, a real job. So I show up—I’m 24. You know, I’m literally just parking cars, and there are 19- and 20-year-olds who were—and this is the Volvo dealership—you know, they’re working on the highest-end electronics on these cars.”

“They had a knack for it,” said Coghill. “They went—tied to a tier—for six months. They’re doing continual education through Volvo North America. And these kids—these kids have a house, and they have no debt. They’re four years younger than me. And I’m thinking, you know, what on earth did I do? Why did I go into all of this debt?”
