A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to the Lake Villa Community Consolidated School District 41 on January 28, 2025. The request, sent by us at the Lake County Gazette, seeks access to copies of all emails and memos from the past year that contain specific keywords.

The keywords in question are “Lucy Calkins” and “Units of Study”. As a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we believe that access to these public records is essential for fulfilling our professional responsibilities. These responsibilities include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.

In light of our role in disseminating information, we have also requested a fee waiver as a media professional under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140.

It’s important to note that according to the Illinois Report Card, the average state teacher salary in 2023 was $73,916, while the state average Administrative Salary stood at $116,908. The average student-to-administrative ratio is pegged at 141:1, with an average student-to-teacher ratio of 17:1. Interestingly enough, over half – precisely 58% – of teachers in Illinois hold a master’s degree or higher.

This data underscores the importance of transparency within our educational institutions. By obtaining access to these records via our FOIA request, we aim to continue providing comprehensive coverage on matters related to local government and education policy.
