Illinois House Republicans recently participated in the Illinois Farm Bureau Annual Meeting, held from December 6 to 9. The conference brought together agricultural leaders and stakeholders from across Illinois to address challenges facing the industry, discuss new opportunities, and develop policies aimed at strengthening agriculture in the state.

Lawmakers engaged with Farm Bureau members through policy discussions focused on topics such as land use, environmental stewardship, regulatory reform, and supporting future generations of farmers. They highlighted their commitment to advocating for farm families in Illinois.

“House Republicans appreciated the opportunity to collaborate directly with those who grow the products that feed, fuel, and clothe our state; and we look forward to continuing to work with the Farm Bureau to advocate for policies that help Illinois agriculture thrive,” a statement read.

Several Republican legislators serving in the Illinois House are also active farmers. These include Rep. Jason Bunting, Rep. Bradley Fritts, Rep. Brad Halbrook, Rep. Chris Miller, Rep. Charlie Meier, Rep. Wayne Rosenthal, and Rep. Dan Swanson.

Each spring during Illinois Agriculture Legislative Day at the State Capitol in Springfield, students and educators from Future Farmers of America (FFA) visit lawmakers such as those from Representative Tom Weber’s district. During these visits, students meet legislators and advocate for agriculture while presenting baskets of locally grown products.

When not in legislative session, representatives continue engaging with farm families and agribusinesses throughout their districts.

In September, Representatives Dan Swanson, Norine Hammond, and Travis Weaver organized Farmland Assessment Seminars across several counties—Rock Island, Henry, Knox, Warren, McDonough, and Mercer—to help residents understand farmland assessment processes. Brenda Matherly from the Illinois Farm Bureau led presentations on how property owners can challenge assessments they believe are incorrect.

In July, Representative Jason Bunting hosted Sen. Meg Loughran Cappel and Sen. Chris Balkema during a Ford-Iroquois County Farm Bureau Adopt-A-Legislator event in his district. The group toured Heritage FS in Gilman to learn about herbicide application practices and visited One Earth Energy in Gibson City for an overview of ethanol production and carbon capture projects.

Additionally last summer, Representative Joe Sosnowski participated in an educational activity by adopting an acre at a Boone County soybean farm to learn about soybean cultivation firsthand.

These activities reflect ongoing efforts by House Republicans to maintain strong ties with local agricultural communities throughout the year.

Weber has represented Illinois’ 64th House District since his election in 2019 as a Republican after succeeding Barbara Wheeler.
