The Lake Bluff Public Library has announced that it is experiencing further delays in receiving and processing new books and materials following the decision by Baker & Taylor, one of its main distributors, to cease operations.
Earlier this year, the library had informed patrons about ongoing delays caused by supply chain and distributor issues. The latest development—the closure of Baker & Taylor—is expected to cause additional disruptions in fulfilling book holds and processing new materials.
Library staff are working to address the issue by seeking alternative vendors and retail sources to fill outstanding orders and backorders.“Our team continues to monitor the situation closely and is working to minimize disruption for Library users. We greatly appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate these changes,” the library stated.
Baker & Taylor, founded in 1828, has served for nearly two centuries as a major U.S. distributor of books and media to public libraries, schools, and academic institutions. In October 2025, the company announced that it will cease operations and wind down by early 2026—a decision described as “extraordinarily disruptive” for libraries nationwide. Industry reports cite a failed acquisition by Readerlink Distribution Services, mounting financial strain, and unpaid inventory issues among the factors contributing to the shutdown. The closure means many libraries and publishers must now establish new distribution arrangements to replace longstanding contracts with Baker & Taylor.
The Lake Bluff Public Library, located at 123 E. Scranton Ave., serves as a community hub offering materials, programs, and technology resources for local residents. Approximately 94 percent of its operating budget is funded by local property taxes, with the remainder supported by grants and donations. The building also houses the Lake Bluff History Museum, which operates from the library’s east wing and is largely volunteer-run.
