The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of a Waukegan man following a drug trafficking investigation conducted by its Special Investigations Group (SIG), which is part of the federally funded High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) program.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, SIG launched an investigation into Carlton Thomas, 47, residing on the 200 block of South Victory Street in Waukegan, after receiving information suggesting his involvement in narcotics sales. The SIG detectives initiated an undercover operation that confirmed Thomas was distributing crack cocaine within Lake County.
On July 22, 2025, SIG obtained a search warrant for Thomas’ residence. Before executing the warrant, detectives observed him leaving his home in a vehicle and conducted a traffic stop, leading to his arrest with nearly five grams of crack cocaine in his possession. A subsequent search of the residence resulted in the discovery of nearly 10 grams of crack cocaine, more than 2,500 grams of cannabis, and two firearms.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office has approved multiple felony charges against Thomas. These include delivery of cannabis and controlled substances (Class 1 felonies), unlawful possession of weapons by a felon (two Class 2 felonies), and possession of both cannabis and controlled substances (Class 2 and Class 4 felonies, respectively). Thomas remains in custody at the Lake County Jail while awaiting a detention hearing. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
