For the second consecutive year, Lake Forest College students and alumni who are certified by the IRS are offering free, in-person tax preparation services to eligible community members. The program, which helps individuals file their 2025 tax returns this spring, is designed to benefit both local residents and the college’s students.
Paulina Argomaniz, a 2025 graduate of Lake Forest College, participated as a Business Operations Assistant for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program last year. She described her experience as “impactful” because it allowed her to serve the community while gaining important professional skills during her studies.
“The core of our work involved providing free tax assistance to individuals and families, which was incredibly fulfilling,” Argomaniz said. “The skills I developed have had a lasting effect on my career trajectory; the ability to manage tasks efficiently, communicate clearly, and apply a meticulous approach to my work are all directly attributable to my time there.”
During its pilot run last year, volunteers from Lake Forest College assisted 225 people with filing their income taxes.
“It was an invaluable period of learning that continues to shape my professional approach long after graduation,” Argomaniz added.
Jackie Slaats, Vice President for Career Advancement and Community Engagement at Lake Forest College, reflected on last year’s launch of VITA as an “incredible” success.
“The dedication and teamwork of our students, faculty, and staff in preparing for the VITA program, coupled with the professionalism and community spirit displayed during client visits, is a real point of pride for the College,” Slaats said. “It’s fun to see our students gain valuable career skills and experience in such a meaningful way. We look forward to this year’s program being even more successful as community awareness grows.”
