Lake Forest College’s mock trial Team B received the Spirit of AMTA award at the regional American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) competition, held at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana from February 27 to 28. The team was recognized for professionalism, civility, justice, and fair play, with peer teams selecting them as the sole recipient of this honor.
In addition to the team award, Nolen Heinrichs ’28 earned a best witness award for his performance representing both the defense and prosecution. “We are a very hard-working team, but above that we hold a strong respect for opponents and rules,” Heinrichs said. “So, to be recognized for that was immensely gratifying, and I felt very proud of the team. In terms of the witness award, I felt happy to earn that award because I often feel witnessing is under respected in mock trial.” Heinrichs also thanked teammate Shannon Shane ’26 for writing the direct examination used in his witness role.
Team A from Lake Forest College also performed well at the event by winning several rounds against leading competitors.
The college’s mock trial teams are coached by Assistant Professor of Politics and Chair of Legal Studies Stephanie Caparelli. She commented on her students’ efforts: “Mock trial is a mentally exhausting team sport—and they played it at the highest level against nationally ranked teams,” Caparelli said. “This program is so special because we are of course learning trial skills and rules of evidence, but more importantly, how to zealously and passionately put on a case while playing fair, being professional, and being kind to others.”
Each year, AMTA hosts over 700 mock trial teams from about 400 universities and colleges across the United States.
