Lake Zurich District 95 closes all schools January 23 due to extreme cold

All schools in Lake Zurich Community Unit School District 95 will be closed on Friday, January 23, 2026, due to forecasts of extremely cold weather. Wind chills are expected to reach between -30 and -40 degrees Fahrenheit, which can cause frostbite within ten minutes.

This closure affects all students in the district, including those attending off-campus schools. PreK-8th grade after-school activities scheduled for that day are also cancelled. The high school administration will provide updates regarding high school activities and athletics.

Dr. Kelley Gallt, Superintendent of Lake Zurich Community Unit School District 95, stated: “Due to projections of extreme cold weather tomorrow, including wind chills in the range of -30 to -40 degrees, all District 95 schools will be closed on Friday, January 23rd, 2026. In these temperature ranges frostbite can occur within as little as 10 minutes.”

“This cancellation also pertains to students attending off-campus schools,” Gallt continued. “All preK-8th grade after school activities for Friday, January 23rd will be cancelled. Information about high school activities/athletics for Friday, January 23rd will be communicated by the high school administration, coaches OR sponsors.”

“As a result of this closure the district will utilize an emergency day at the end of the year. Thank you and please stay safe,” she added.

Lake Zurich Community Unit School District 95 serves several schools in Lake County including Isaac Fox Elementary School and Lake Zurich High School (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/). The district’s student population is predominantly White at nearly 79 percent; other represented groups include Hispanic (7.5 percent), Asian (9.5 percent), and Black (1.3 percent) students (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/). According to state data, there are over four hundred teachers in the district with an average salary above $76,000 per year; most teachers are women and none have more than ten absences annually (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/). In fiscal year 2020, spending per student was nearly $25,000 for a total expenditure exceeding $136 million (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/).
