North Chicago Community Unit School District 187 has reached several milestones, according to a recent feature in the Lake County Regional Office of Education Newsletter.
All schools within the district have achieved Marzano High Reliability certification. The district includes A.J. Katzenmaier Academy, Evelyn Alexander School, Forrestal Elementary School, Learn 10 Charter School, LEARN Charter – North Chicago Campus, Neal Math Science Academy, and North Chicago Community High School. A significant addition was made to Forrestal Elementary with the installation of an 11-ton USS Topeka anchor to honor military families in the community.
The Class of 2026 has received 144 college acceptances and earned $3.12 million in scholarships so far.

North Chicago Community Unit School District 187 serves pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade and enrolled 3,319 students during the 2019-2020 school year. The district is located in North Chicago and Lake County. According to data from the Illinois State Board of Education, there are 224 teachers employed by the district with an average salary of $52,463 before pension contributions; nearly 70 percent are women and just over 30 percent are men. Demographically, the student body is composed of approximately 6.7 percent White students, 31 percent Black students, 55.6 percent Hispanic students, and less than one percent Asian students (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/).
Financial records show that in 2020 the district spent $25,262 per student for a total expenditure of $83.8 million (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/).
The Illinois State Board of Education also reported that in the same year there were 889 chronically truant students in District 187—about a quarter of its enrollment—which is higher than the statewide average (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/).
