North Chicago School District 187 has released its schedule of activities and events for January 2026. The district, which serves several schools in Lake County including A.J. Katzenmaier Academy, Evelyn Alexander School, Forrestal Elementary School, Learn 10 Charter School, LEARN Charter – North Chicago Campus, Neal Math Science Academy, and North Chicago Community High School, will host a variety of academic, sports, health, and arts events throughout the month. The calendar begins on January 2 with teacher co-planning sessions at North Chicago Community High School (NCCHS). Sports activities start on January 3 with freshman and varsity basketball games against Boylan. Staff meetings and lesson planning are scheduled for January 5 at NCCHS.

On January 7, there will be a dental visit for kindergarten through third grade students at Alexander School. The same day also features an early release across the district. Girls’ bowling matches are set for January 8 at Bertand Lanes.

Report cards will be sent home to all students on January 9. Parents can participate in a virtual workshop conducted in Spanish on January 14.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on January 19; all district schools will be closed in observance of the holiday.

Other highlights include the AJK Winter Wonderland event on January 22 at AJK school and a Cocoa Drive Thru combined with Erin’s Law activities at GBECC and Alex schools on January 26. Picture Day for the class of ’26 is scheduled for January 29 at NCCHS.

The month concludes with a varsity basketball game against Elk Grove at NCCHS on January 31.

According to data from the Illinois State Board of Education, North Chicago Community Unit School District 187 employs 224 teachers who earn an average salary of $52,463 before pension contributions; nearly seventy percent are women while just over thirty percent are men. Demographically, the student body is composed of approximately fifty-six percent Hispanic students, thirty-one percent Black students, nearly seven percent White students, and less than one percent Asian students (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/).
