North Chicago School District 187 released its schedule of important dates and activities for April, according to a March 31 announcement. The district outlined several key events for students, parents, and the community throughout the month.
The schedule highlights include non-attendance days, testing dates, progress report distributions, board meetings, cultural celebrations such as DÃa del Niño/Children’s Day Festival on April 29 at North Chicago Community High School (NCCHS), and various Parent Advisory Committee meetings. These activities aim to engage families and provide support across the district’s schools.
Student-centered events this month feature the NLCC Art Show at Grant High School on April 10, multiple ‘Pack the Gym’ nights at A.J. Katzenmaier Academy, a Media Showcase in NCCHS Auditorium on April 24, Lake County Youth Soccer Tournament on April 26 at A.J. Katzenmaier Academy, and a District Instrumental Concert at NCCHS on April 30. Spring sports including track, soccer, baseball, softball, tennis and volleyball are underway alongside after-school programs such as tutoring and dance practices.
The North Chicago School District serves Lake County through several schools: A.J. Katzenmaier Academy, Evelyn Alexander School, Forrestal Elementary School, Learn 10 Charter School, LEARN Charter – North Chicago Campus, Neal Math Science Academy and North Chicago Community High School according to Illinois Report Card. The district enrolled 3,319 students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade during the 2019-2020 school year according to Illinois Report Card.
Demographically,the district is comprised of approximately 6.7 percent White students, with Black students making up about one-third of enrollment (31 percent), Hispanic students accounting for more than half (55.6 percent), and Asian students representing less than one percent (0.6 percent). In terms of staffing,there are currently about 224 teachers earning an average salary of $52,463 before pension contributions; nearly seventy percent are women, with no teachers having more than ten absences in a school year.
In fiscal matters,the district spent $25,262 per student in the year ending in June 2020, totaling over $83 million.Chronic truancy remains an issue with nearly nine hundred chronically truant students reported—26.8 percent compared to a statewide average of under ten percent.
Weekly early release days continue each Wednesday throughout April with dismissal times varying by school between approximately 1:35 PM and 1:45 PM; additional details can be found via official district channels.
