The Park District of Highland Park reported on Mar. 9 the outcomes of its February meetings, which included updates on facility projects, contract approvals, and environmental assessments.
These meetings are important for community members as they outline decisions affecting local parks, recreational programming, and infrastructure improvements.
During the Feb. 11 workshop meeting, Williams Architects was tasked with evaluating the feasibility of relocating the ceramics program to the Danny Cunniff South Shelter. The West Ridge Center demolition is scheduled for May, with new programming potentially beginning in 2027 if approved. In the meantime, staff have partnered with the Art Center of Highland Park to provide alternative ceramics programming. The Board also rejected initial bids for locker room renovations at Park Fitness and authorized a rebid, awarding Kandu Construction Inc. the contract for base work and two alternates after reviewing new submissions.
The City of Highland Park is considering placing the “Miss Nitro” sculpture at either Brown Park or Lincoln Place Park. Staff will hold neighborhood meetings in February to gather input from residents about this decision and its potential impacts.
At a Feb. 17 finance committee meeting, staff reviewed several items for upcoming consent agenda approval. These included recommendations for purchasing electricity, fire alarm upgrades at Club Pickle and Padel, electrical gear upgrades at Centennial Ice Arena, mechanical pump replacement at Hidden Creek AquaPark, and installation of a geothermal HVAC unit at Rosewood Interpretative Center. Contract proposals for Hidden Creek AquaPark and Rosewood Beach concessions were also discussed.
On Feb. 25, Champions Point LLC presented findings regarding proposed access to Heller Nature Center. Staff identified concerns related to vegetation impacts, wildlife disruption, tree health risks due to earthwork near trails, and possible conflicts with existing programs if trail widening occurs. Recommendations included further environmental assessments during the growing season and additional studies before proceeding.
The Board approved several resolutions including electricity purchase agreements; fire alarm coverage changes; employee handbook updates; equipment upgrades; playground refresh contracts; and concession license agreements.
