U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-Dist. 14) voted late last week with a House majority that passed the Restoring Americans’ Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act, which would cut funding for Planned Parenthood and repeal principal components of the Affordable Care Act.
“Fighting for families hurt by the president’s health care law and for women and children harmed by abortion providers has consistently been a priority of mine," Hultgren said. "Promoting job creation by repealing the (Affordable Care Act's) most costly mandates and taxes affecting employers, workers and their families is also something I have been standing up for since I began my work in Congress. And finally, I am a firm believer in reining in out-of-control government spending driven by allegedly impenetrable mandatory program(s). I am extremely pleased that this reconciliation bill clearly achieves these three important goals.”
The bill would halt funding to abortion providers for one year and shift $235 million in federal money into community health centers that provide a range of services for women.
The bill also would negate the individual and employer mandates that are part of the Affordable Care Act, as well as lift the so-called "Cadillac tax" that will tax high-cost insurance programs beginning in 2018.
The Restoring Americans’ Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act was drafted as a budget reconciliation bill to take advantage of congressional rules that prevent filibustering of this particular type of resolution.
The bill now moves to the Senate.
