U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-Dist. 14) said on Monday that the Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded approximately $48 million in grants to Illinois' state and local governments to fund affordable-housing projects.
More than $43 million will go to the state, with the remaining funds going to Kane and Will Counties.
“Colder months are ahead in Illinois and the 14th District, and I’m pleased at the additional assistance provided to our neighbors most in need this next year,” Hultgren said. “I trust our state and local officials will use this funding efficiently and responsibly to ensure the ‘least of these’ in our communities are served well.”
The money comes from four different federal grant programs, including Community Development Block Grants, which fund opportunities for low- and middle-income people living in urban areas; Emergency Solutions Grants, which provide funding to improve the availability of shelter facilities and other services that help the homeless; the HOME program, which funds affordable-housing projects for low-income and very-low-income people; and the HOPWA program, which supports housing and other services for low-income residents with HIV/AIDS and their families.
