Highland Park will hold a blood drive from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Highland Park Fire Department, 1130 Central Avenue, Station No. 33.

The drive will be managed by the blood-collection company LifeSource.

To donate blood, participants must show proof of identification, be at least 17 years old (16-year-olds may donate with parental consent) and weigh at least 110 lbs.

Donors should be available for at least an hour, which includes time to check in and get a brief physical with LifeSource staff before the blood donation. The actual blood donation should only take 10 minutes.

Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Demand for blood for transfusions is consistently high and is expected to grow as the current generation ages. LifeSource estimates that it would need to see 1,000 blood-drive donors every day to keep up with the needs of Chicagoland hospitals. In addition to facilitating blood drives, LifeSource also maintains 18 community-donor centers in the area.

Walk-ins for Highland Park's blood drive are acceptable, but residents are encouraged to sign up in advance by contacting LifeSource at 1-877-LIFESOURCE or enter Highland Park's registration code "243D" online at www.lifesource.org
