The City of Highwood has hired professional debt collection company Municipal Collections of America (MCOA) to help collect outstanding debts from residents and businesses.
Municipal Collections of America will facilitate the collection of unpaid parking tickets, utility bills, building department fees, fire alarm monitoring fees and other outstanding bills. The city is in the process of auditing its portfolio of debts and continues to send out notices to those who owe. Anyone receiving one of the notices who has questions should contact MCOA directly.
The city has also partnered with the Illinois’ Debt Recovery Offset Program to help recover debts through the withholding of state income tax and lottery winnings. The program, facilitated by the State Comptroller, can also garnish wages from the paychecks of state employees who go into collection for unpaid debts.
Highwood officials estimate that the total outstanding debt owed to the city amounts to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
MCOA is based in Lansing, Illinois, and stewards professional municipal debt collection programs for 75 local governments across the country.
