The Deerfield Appearance Review Commission held its regular meeting Nov. 23 at Village Hall.
The commission reviewed a proposal from a team of architects, developers and property owners to renovate the northern section of Deerbrook Mall that would add two new buildings and expand the Jewel Osco store.
The details of the 4,400-sq.-ft. addition came under scrutiny from the commission, which gave almost all of its 2 1/2 hour meeting to the proposal. Of particular concern was the size and strength of lighting and the planned location of trash bins.
The commission eventually voted by a 3-1 margin to approve the proposal with the conditions that one of the trash areas be moved away from one of the new buildings, that the design of the Jewel Osco sign be changed to highlight the sign's red face, that the developers submit a sample board to the town planner and that the builders choose the commission's preferred facade material.
Commissioners Beth Chaitman, Lisa Dunn and Elizabeth Low were absent.
