Lake County’s Public Works and Transportation Committee met 8:30 a.m. Wednesday to consider public works, data, transportation and construction projects.

Call to order, pledge and approval of minutes were first on the agenda, followed by items added to the agenda and a public comment period.

In old and new business, the committee heard a joint resolution for upgrading the Public Works Maintenance Facility in Waukegan. Built in 1977, the building requires roofing, garage and door replacements; ADA-compliant alterations; and a new training room.

Of four contractors, Lake County selected Boller Construction Company of Waukegan with the lowest bid of $1,220,500. The vendor has an existing relationship with the county and has performed past projects satisfactorily.

Also presented were joint resolutions for vendor services from a data company from Fredericksburg, Va., selected to handle Public Works Department utility bill payments for an estimated amount of $92,032.

A five-year Capital Improvement Plan was offered to the Public Works department, followed by the Public Works Director’s report.

In the Division of Transportation, an underground utility locating project with the lowest bid of $171,744, which will be performed by a Sterling Heights, Mich., company, was introduced.

Additionally, the committee considered two sales tax appropriations for transportation funds: $600,000 to install electronic communication structures, including cameras, along various routes and an additional $1.5 million to cover right-of-way costs in a widening project.

A joint committee action item to approve extra funding for a road reconstruction was the final item in the public works sector.

Following the Transportation Director’s report, an Executive Session and County Administrator’s report, the meeting was adjourned.
