Metra is turning to students to help promote rail safety in the age of digital distractions.
“Eyes Up, Devices Down: Look, Listen, Live” is the theme of Metra’s 12th annual safety poster and essay contests, Metra said in a release. The theme emphasizes the potential danger of being distracted by electronic devices near railroad tracks and crossings.
Students in grades K-12 in Metra’s service area, which includes Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties, may submit entries for either the poster or essay contest by the Jan. 31, the release said.

For the poster contest, first, second and third place winners will be selected from each grade level. Prizes include an iPad for first place, a $250 gift card for second place and a $100 gift card for third place, the release said. Metra will feature the winners’ designs on its website, station displays, safety calendar and weekend passes. The school submitting the most entries for the safety poster contest will receive a new computer, the release said.
For the essay contest, students should describe in 300 words or less how to practice “Eyes Up, Devices Down: Look, Listen, Live,” the release said. First-place winners in three divisions will each get an iPad. Divisions include grades K-4, 5-8 and 9-12.
More information and submission links are available through the Metra website or the Metra contest FaceBook page.
