Community High School District 117 students suspended, expelled 280 times in a single school year

Community High School District 117 reported one expulsions and 279 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 280 students during the year. That equates to 10.3 percent of the 2,710 students enrolled.

Students were expelled for one incident with drugs.

Of the 187 in-school suspensions, 146 were given to boys and 41 were given to girls, all of whom were high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 171 incidents. There were five incidents of violence without physical injury. For 167 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 92 out-of-school suspensions, 72 were given to boys and 20 were given to girls, all of whom were high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 54 incidents. There were 15 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 42 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
