North Chicago School District 187 students suspended 669 times in a single school year

North Chicago School District 187 reported 669 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 669 students during the year. That equates to 18.8 percent of the 3,564 students enrolled.

Of the 483 in-school suspensions, 319 were given to boys and 164 were given to girls, including 123 elementary or middle schoolers and 360 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 444 incidents. There were 23 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 476 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 186 out-of-school suspensions, 125 were given to boys and 61 were given to girls, including 129 elementary or middle schoolers and 57 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 113 incidents. There were 43 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 70 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
