Illinois State House District 62 issued the following announcement on June 1
State Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, worked hard this session in Springfield to lower property taxes, increase accountability and transparency in local government, and investigate hazardous ethylene oxide leaks. Yingling is also fighting for a stronger Illinois by supporting the middle class through policies such as the Fair Tax and increasing Illinoisians’ access to quality health care.
“While much was accomplished in Springfield during this session, there is still much more work to do,” said Yingling. “We must stop rising property taxes, and by holding local governments accountable, we can ensure taxpayer money is being properly used. I am proud to support policies to build a stronger Illinois and a stronger middle class through a Fair Tax, promoting job training, and protecting health care from attacks by Washington politicians.”
Yingling’s highest priority was tackling property taxes as well as addressing corruption in local government. In addition to sponsoring numerous bills to reduce property taxes, Yingling backed the creation of the Property Tax Reduction Task Force to study solutions to the property tax crisis. Yingling worked with his colleagues to address corruption scandals with Senate Bill 1236, which allows for the removal of an unelected county board chairperson, allow for newly elected county officials to request a transitional audit of the county’s finances, and prevent fraud by requiring county officials to disclose relationships with potential vendors before the bidding process.
Yingling also sponsored House Bill 457, which would require the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) to reassess and create new standards for the emission of the dangerous chemical ethylene oxide (EtO). The purpose of the legislation is to protect public health by slowly reducing emissions within 5 years and allowing for revocation of permits if public health is put at significant risk. The IEPA would develop the new rules in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) and other entities.
“Middle-class families need to be protected from multi-million dollar corporations who are only concerned about increasing their profits off the lives of hard-working individuals,” said Yingling. “Regardless if they are putting poisonous toxins into our communities or increasing prescription drug costs, we need to make sure that middle-class families are not being taken advantage of by these companies.”
To Yingling, a stronger middle class makes for a stronger Illinois, achieved through a Fair Tax that cuts taxes on the middle class while making sure the wealthy pay their fair share, with more than 98 percent of families in the 62nd district seeing a tax cut. Yingling also backed efforts to promote high paying job training and incentives for businesses to retrain workers for higher paying jobs with wages over $35 an hour. Finally, as Washington politicians conspire with special interest to remove health care protections, Yingling supports legislation to protect access to quality health care plans for Illinois families.
