Illinois State House District 61 issued the following announcement on Nov. 22

Legislation sponsored by state Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee, regulating the skyrocketing out-of-pocket cost of insulin received approval in both chambers and will now go to the governor’s desk to be signed into law.

“The prices our residents have been forced to pay for insulin are corrupt, and the pharmaceutical companies that have manufactured this crisis should be ashamed,” Mason said. “No one should have to choose between purchasing vitally important medication or putting food on the table, yet, due to the rapid rise of the cost of insulin over the past decade, this has become the reality for countless diabetics in Illinois.”

Senate Bill 667, supported by the AARP, reduces the financial burden on diabetics by capping the monthly out-of-pocket cost for insulin at $100 per 30-day supply. Senate Bill 667 received bipartisan support in both the House and the Senate.

“The passage of this legislation means we’re giving financial freedom back to diabetics who have been forced to pay sky-high prices for insulin for far too long,” Mason said. “I’m proud of the General Assembly’s decision to approve this measure to make Illinois a leader in affordable healthcare. I look forward to working on more legislation to address the flaws in our broken healthcare system and give much-needed relief to families and senior citizens in Illinois.”
