Illinois' 6th Congressional District issued the following announcement on Feb. 25.

Today, U.S. Representative Sean Casten (IL-06) released the following statement condemning the U.S. Senate’s vote to end debate on two bills designed to limit abortion rights, S. 3275 the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act and S. 311 the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.

S. 3275 would ban a woman from seeking a safe, legal abortion after 20 weeks and S. 311 would amend the criminal code for medical professionals who do not provide medical care for a child born alive, despite current law in every state already criminalizing infanticide.

Casten said, “As someone who represents the 6th District of Illinois, the same District once represented by Henry Hyde, a fierce opponent of women’s rights, I take particular pride in standing up for women’s rights. Make no mistake, these two measures are Senator McConnell and congressional Republicans’ latest attempt to limit a woman’s right to live, work, and make decisions about her health and future. Reproductive health care decisions like these should be made solely by a woman with the counsel of her doctor, not by politicians who want to cast their religious dogma on women they know nothing about. In Congress, I will always fight to protect safe, legal abortion in this country.”  

Both bills failed to meet the 60-vote threshold needed to end debate and be considered for final passage.
