Adlai E Stevenson High School District 125 issued the following announcement on April 16.
Seniors Dylan Hu, Emily Tao Kang and Anna Wang have been named as semifinalists in the 2020 U.S. Presidential Scholars competition sponsored by the Department of Education. They are among 23 high school seniors from Illinois and among approximately 600 students nationwide selected from more than 5,000 candidates.
The trio was among 13 Stevenson students named as Presidential Scholar Candidates in January, including Advait Deoskar, Shrusti Jain, Jaesup Kim, Matthew Li, Emily Lu, Radha Patel, Pranav Putta, Gabriel Ran, Samuel Roytburd and Joshua Tsai.
Students have three paths to become a Presidential Scholar. The majority are selected based on broad academic achievement. Approximately 20 will be chosen based on their scholarship and talent in the arts. Another 20 will be picked based on their ability and accomplishments in career and technical fields.
The 161-member Presidential Scholar class will be announced in May. In the past, the winners have been invited to Washington, D.C., in June for recognition ceremonies, including a White House-sponsored ceremony.
Since the program’s founding in 1964, five Stevenson students have been named Presidential Scholars: David Hou (Class of 2018), Kathy Xiang (Class of 2017), Vivian Wang (Class of 2013), Zach Blumenfeld (Class of 2011) and Michele Trickey (Class of 2006).
