Parents are voicing strong opposition to Antioch's mask mandate in wake of Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s mask mandate for the public school system.

A parent who identified herself as Beata said the mask mandate was against what she believes in.

"We are fighting for our kids' health and well-being! The masks that Board of Education are mandating on our kids are so harmful to their young bodies, their mental development! The only real science is about their harm. Kids need fresh air to grow, be healthy, see their friends' faces and faces of their beloved teachers. Wish we would have our representatives that would’ve fought for them," she said.

Antioch Community High School District 117 and Antioch Elementary School District 34 are requiring students to wear mask, per the state mandate.

The Antioch School District 34 will require all students, staff, and visitors to wear a face-covering while in Antioch CCSD 34 buildings and on school busses, according to Superintendent Bradford Hubbard in a release.

Hubbard said he’s listened to everyone in the community, with differing viewpoints, and found the best course of action was for the school district to monitor mandates, guidance, recommendations and metrics.

Fox News medical contributor Dr. Marty Makary said in a July episode of "Fox and Friends" that there is inadequate data regarding mask use and children older than three.

"Look, kids who are healthy are extremely low risk and constitute such a small minority of overall cases,” Makary said. “(At) 0.05 percent, that's five-hundredths of one percent. Even though they're 20% of the U.S. population. We've lost all sense of risk. It's distorted. More kids die from the common cold. They need to be careful, especially if they have comorbid conditions."

The Centers for Disease Control has cited 10 studies the have affirmed the benefit of universal masking at the community level.

The report included a unified hospital system, a German city, two U.S. states, a group of 15 U.S. states and Washington, D.C.,  along with Canada and the U.S. nationally.

When universal masking was implemented, new infections fell significantly, with two of the studies showing a reduction in death as well.

Another study solidified those results by reporting fewer hospitalizations following a mask mandate implementation.
