Representative Tom Weber criticizes the schools that are utilizing “adaptive pauses” to force students back to remote learning in the wake of the Illinois State Board of Education's halt to tracking remote vs in-person learning.

“There’s no justification for shutting down in-school education," Weber said in a post to his Facebook account. "Our kids have suffered enough over the last two years.”

As of September 2021, according to ABC 20, 25 people under the age of 20 have died with COVID-19 (not necessarily directly from the coronavirus). Nationally, the CDC reports that there have been only 600 deaths relating to the coronavirus from individuals under 18. These numbers also occur despite the fact that no coronavirus vaccination has yet been approved for children under the age of 12.

The New York Times reported that a third of surveyed high school students felt depressed due to remote learning, and a quarter of those students reported feeling disconnected from teachers, classmates, and their school communities.

While the ISBE is keeping a list of schools that are mask-optional, they are no longer tracking schools that are returning to remote learning, according to The Center Square.

Several schools across the state are using an “adaptive pause” to return to remote learning, but it is unclear exactly how many.  Tri-City, which is located northeast of Springfield, has announced that it will be taking an “adaptive pause” until Jan. 10. Springman Middle School in Glenview has  put its 8th graders to go on an “adaptive pause” from Dec, 7 until Jan. 3. Wirepoints reported, with an extra caveat: The school emailed parents of the 8th graders saying that those students should also not 'otherwise gather outside of the home.'
