The Antioch School Board recently recognized the achievements of several outstanding local students.

During the Feb. 21 Antioch School District Board of Education meeting, officials welcomed students and their families to be recognized for their outstanding behavior in the classroom. Henry Sanford, Charlotte Cheek, Levi Garcia, Arabella Cree, Kaylee Nesmith and Moira Duncan all were recognized as being model students of the month from the Mary Kay McNeill Early Learning Center. Their teachers nominated the students for their behavior in the classroom, excellent dedication to their work, respect shown toward classmates and teachers, creativity in play and work, and following the rules in the school.

The board also recognized students who recently had their work published through the Poetry Books program. Under the program, a book of poetry is submitted by students at each school before being published. The book is in each school's respective library, so students can go and see their published work and read some of their classmates' writings. Students who had their work published also get to sign the library's copy.

"We’ve been doing this poetry contest for 14 years now – I counted the books in the library," Antioch School District teacher Amy Henning said at the meeting. "So I’m really excited that this continues and we continue to have published authors. The contest is open again, starting in March, so [students] can choose to write another poem and see if they can get another one published."

Students who were published this cycle were Natalie Brock, Emily Brock, Maryrose Dadivas, Nicholas Daniels, Sanvi Desai, Tyler Drennan, Rylan Eberhardt, Alexandra Fleischman, Claire Fox, Kennedy Gomez, Angel Karstens, Eli Lopez, Kylie Pfleeger, Cecilia Sadler, Charlie Schwisow, Makayla Scott, Reese Turner, Mathilda Wieder, Tadhg Willegal, Keith DeGeorge, Sydney Drochak, Erik Hall, George Leedle, Aiden Nelson, Jaxon Sullivan, Luciana White, Ava Housh, Kaitlyn Kusek, Kaitlyn Sperling, Mary Anders, Anabelle Arizmendi, Sloan Bargle, Taliya Bernard, Tess Caruso, Annebelle Duller, Olivia Hruska, Millie Johnson, Stephen Laue, Molly Pounds, Olivia Rivera, Callie Rout, Audrey Ruhl, Lily Seegers, Riley Tatulli, Hailey Wickert, Addison Andell, Jonathan Becker, Ashlyn Lechwar, Hudson MacClure, Namhe Manohar, Elena Narvaez, Maria Schichtl, Max Sutton, Vivian Verner, Dylan Von Drasek, Sydney Wintercorn, Dean Farrell, Jacob Leiter, Hannah Nampel, Corrine Ryan, Addison Williams and Scarlett Sawatski.

The final recognitions were for students from Antioch Upper Grade school. Students Alexis LaSage and Taylor Bock were celebrated for their Rock Transformations Summative Assessment, which was a project to showcase the rock cycle and how different rocks are formed. Both girls created comics that displayed how rocks can change into different forms and clearly explained the different processes.

Students Rylan Nash-Vaughn and Matias Rodriquez also were recognized for a creative response to their creative writing class project. The two boys created a podcast about Prime, a sports drink that they both enjoy.
