Village of Buffalo Grove staff is expected to recommend zoning changes at the former IHOP property at 51 McHenry Road to build a Lazy Dog Restaurant at the site at the Planning & Zoning Commission meeting on Oct. 18.

Golden Property Development plans to redevelop the property in the Grove Shopping Center at the northeast corner of Lake Cook and McHenry Roads. The property was originally developed into a Wags/Shoney’s restaurant and later became an IHOP. The restaurant building was demolished in 2020 and the site has since been vacant.

The proposed Lazy Dog restaurant development is considered a key part of the Lake Cook Corridor, as it is one of its most visible corners with high daily traffic counts. The Village of Buffalo Grove Planning & Zoning Commission staff report states that the intersection has an annual daily traffic count of 11,900 on McHenry Road and 29,900 on Lake Cook Road.

According to the staff report, the proposed plan for the Lucky Dog restaurant is believed to provide a focal point for the major intersection, be an excellent addition to the Lake Cook Corridor, and complement the other developments in the area.

The proposed Lazy Dog restaurant would be a one-story building on the .86-acre site. It would have approximately 7,500 square feet of space and include a 1,400 square foot covered outdoor patio with a central fire pit.

The Village of Buffalo Grove staff's recommendation for zoning changes and the proposed Lazy Dog restaurant will be discussed at the Planning & Zoning Commission meeting on Oct. 18.
