North Palos School District 117 is celebrating the quick thinking and heroic actions of two staff members, Dr. Nada Abid and Fedai Fouz, who saved a student's life last month. The dramatic incident occurred on the afternoon of Friday, January 17, in their classroom at Conrady Jr. High School.
A typical Friday afternoon quickly turned into a moment of crisis when a student suddenly indicated she couldn't breathe and gestured that she was choking. In a display of remarkable composure and swift action, Abid dialed 911 while Fouz began performing the Heimlich maneuver on the distressed student.
After a tense few moments, the student was thankfully able to breathe and speak again. Abid and Fouz remained in contact with 911 dispatchers until paramedics arrived to provide further assistance.
The few minutes that elapsed felt like an eternity, filled with stress and panic. However, Abid and Fouz remained calm and focused, responding precisely as they should in such a critical situation. Their actions serve as an outstanding example of how to react in a medical emergency.
North Palos School District 117 recognizes Abid and Fouz for their exceptional response and quick thinking, hailing them as role models for the entire community. Their actions underscore the importance of preparedness and the profound impact a rapid response can have in saving a life.
At the NPD117 Board of Education meeting held on Tuesday, February 18, the Board formally acknowledged and commended Abid and Fouz for their heroic efforts on January 17. The entire district joins in celebrating their dedication and commitment to the safety and well-being of their students.
