NBA fans are familiar with the chants of "MVP!" resonating through Ball Arena whenever Nuggets superstar Nicola Jokic takes the floor. However, on Wednesday, February 13, there was an additional accolade being celebrated - Most Valuable Teacher (MVT).
The Nuggets honored "Coach" Melissa Garcia at the game as February's MVT. Garcia received dinner, four tickets to the game, and a $2,000 check to spend on her students. She intends to use these funds to support the school's Drone Soccer Program, which she oversees.
The announcement of her award was first made during an assembly at Orchard Park Academy where Nuggets team representatives and mascot "Rocky" appeared to lead a celebration. Rocky thrilled the crowd by making a backwards half-court shot in addition to distributing team merchandise.
During game night, Garcia received special recognition with her name and picture displayed on the arena's large overhead screens.
Prior to this event, Garcia was also honored by the Board of Education for her dedication to her students and school district. In response to these honors, Garcia humbly credited her success to her students.
