Carthage families were informed of an ongoing challenge the district faces regarding transportation to extracurricular activities. Currently, there are no bus drivers available to transport students to all upcoming spring 2025 extracurricular events, including girls’ and boys’ track and scholastic bowl.
In a communication from Dr. Dustin W. Day, Superintendent of Carthage CESD #317, it was stated that "at this time, if your student is wanting to participate in a spring activity/extracurricular event, a parent or guardian will need to transport their child to and from the event. " It was also clarified that coaches or sponsors are not able to transport students.
The district aims to provide parents and guardians with sufficient time to plan for alternative transportation methods. It was noted that scheduled field trips for this spring might also be impacted, with more information following if necessary.
"We apologize for the inconvenience; we have exhausted all our options coming to this conclusion," said Dr. Day.
The district is actively seeking additional bus drivers. Those interested in becoming a bus driver are encouraged to contact Transportation Director Kristi Thompson at the district office at 217-357-3922 for more details on the position.
If a qualified candidate can be hired soon, there is hope that this issue will be resolved by the start of the 2025-2026 school year. The district will keep families informed of any changes.
Dr. Day concluded by inviting any questions or concerns from parents: "If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. "
