Production is underway on a $15 million film project titled The Man Who Changed the World, which tells the true-life story of a local family that lives out the American dream and whose legacy impacts how many celebrate Christmas today.

A part of the Ranum Innovation Campus has been turned into a sound stage for the production, and as part of a unique operating agreement, WPS students were recently given a behind-the-scenes masterclass to learn more about the film industry.

“This is an extraordinary opportunity for our students and community,” said Superintendent Dr. Jeni Gotto. “This story exemplifies what WPS stands for— grit, determination, vision, entrepreneurship, and family. ”

Dean Stoecker, a 1975 graduate of Ranum High School and the founder of a billion-dollar software company, is the executive producer of the film. It details his parents’ life story and the influence of noted architect, inventor, and philosopher Buckminster Fuller.

“This film aspires to honor the true story of Bud and Lolly, whose lives exemplified an innovative and loving family dynamic,” Stoecker told students during their masterclass session. “So our goal was to not make money with the film. It wasn’t to win awards with the film. It was to tell a great story so we could inspire you. ”

This film is the first to be produced by Ranch Productions, founded by Stoecker in hopes of telling stories “that authentically reflect real events that resonate deeply with themes of resilience, love, and the transformative power of family. ”

The Colorado Film Commission is supporting the project with $1.8 million in financial incentives. Colorado Film Commissioner Donald Zuckerman spoke with students as well. The state is currently promoting Boulder as a potential new home for the Sundance Film Festival and believes this production will help highlight local talent and commitment to Colorado filmmaking.
