North Shore District 112 School Board candidate Fishman: ‘A key focus must be to accelerate recent academic growth’

Jaret Fishman is a candidate for the Board of Education for North Shore School District 112 in the April 1 election.

The North Shore School District 112 Board of Education is composed of seven volunteer members elected to four-year terms, with vacancies filled by appointment until the next election.

District 112 serves Highland Park, Highwood and Fort Sheridan, and includes about 3,800 students across nine schools—seven elementary and two middle schools—ranging from pre-K through eighth grade.

“I am a civil rights lawyer and a parent leader that has volunteered for nearly a decade in support of our schools,” Fishman told the Lake County Gazette.

“My relevant experience in the community includes: City of Highland Park’s Human Relations Advisory Group (2 terms); District’s Citizen’s Task Force- facilities planning & referendum (2022); Yes to Invest campaign (2022); D112’s Discovery Team for Strategic Planning (2024); D112’s Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee (2018-present)- Executive Board (past president); D112 Caucus (2018); D113 Caucus (2024); Insight Advocacy (board member).”

Fishman outlined several key priorities fueling his candidacy.

“Academic achievement. A key focus must be to accelerate recent academic growth so that our community’s children will have thriving lives and careers,” he said. “The School Board and District will continue to ensure all students reach their full potential, including enhancing classroom engagement and excitement, offering differentiated learning opportunities for all students, and closing the achievement gap.

“Fiscal responsibility. Financial oversight of the referendum construction, addressing federal funding changes, and Phase 3 of the District’s Long-Range Facilities Plan, will be important near term financial issues.”

“Safety. Maintaining student safety and security will remain of paramount importance for our community and the School Board.”

“Personnel management. Hiring great teachers during the teacher shortage and helping with the superintendent transition are key personnel issues.”

“Community partnerships. Partnerships between the Districts, community, and parents will remain critical to support student mental health, good governance, and to deliver high academic outcomes for all students.”

Fishman along with Lori Fink, Art Kessler, Bennett W. Lasko, Bradley Hergott, Jaret, Ryan Morgan, Sharone Levy Marck and John Guy are vying for four seats on the North Shore School District 112 Board of Education.
