In October, which is recognized as Fire Safety and Fire Prevention Month in remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, students in Coal City Community Unit School District 1 participated in fire safety education with local firefighters. The event aimed to teach young students how to stay safe during a fire.
Firefighters visited the school to discuss their equipment, show their fire truck, read a story, and emphasize that fire safety is important everywhere. Miss Clavenna, one of the teachers involved, said, “We of course have talked about how to be safe at school, but not every parent has had the conversation about what to do at home,” adding, “This was a great opportunity for each student to understand the importance of keeping ourselves safe and learn something new –isn’t that what school is for anyways?“
After meeting with the firefighters, students continued their learning by completing a Scholastic news activity and making their own badges.
