Lake County has announced that residents can utilize the Lake County PASSAGE website or mobile app to access live traffic conditions during the winter months.
According to the Lake County Division of Transportation, Lake County PASSAGE is an intelligent transportation system designed to enhance roadway travel and safety across the county. The system monitors traffic conditions and informs the public about incidents such as crashes, stalled vehicles, debris, and construction. It also optimizes signal operations to alleviate congestion. The system integrates technology with collaboration from federal, state, and local agencies, village partners, and contractors to deliver comprehensive traffic management and information.
The Transportation Management Center (TMC) in Libertyville acts as the operational hub for PASSAGE. Operators and engineers there monitor real-time video feeds, weather updates, 911 dispatch CAD information, and signal network data to address congestion, accidents, and delays. The center operates Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., coordinating with various stakeholders to implement traffic solutions efficiently.
PASSAGE employs Pan-Tilt-Zoom cameras, video detection cameras, adaptive signal systems, portable message boards, smartphone apps, and a two-way data-sharing partnership with Waze for effective traffic flow management. Users can receive email alerts for specific routes, monitor signal operations, and report incidents. According to its website, PASSAGE continues expanding its fiber optic network and traffic monitoring equipment while using collected data to improve roadway performance and safety for all motorists in Lake County.
The Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) oversees constructing, engineering, planning, and maintaining county highways in compliance with the Illinois Highway Code. The division manages the county vehicle fleet and coordinates with township road districts while overseeing federal transportation aid and local public transportation. LCDOT reviews proposed roads for new subdivisions among other responsibilities as mandated by state statutes and the county board. According to its website, LCDOT aims to provide a safe and efficient transportation system that enhances mobility, economic development, and quality of life while upholding values such as integrity, safety, community service, accountability, respect, innovation, and environmental responsibility.
