The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater has placed 179 student teachers in school districts across the region for the fall 2025 semester. These students, from the College of Education and Professional Studies, will serve as student teachers through January 2026.

Among those participating are Heidi Wagner, a History Education major from Antioch, Illinois, who will work in Social Studies at Fort Atkinson High School in the Fort Atkinson School District. Madelyn Welbel, also from Antioch and majoring in Psychology, will teach Social Studies at Mukwonago High School in the Mukwonago School District.

Student teaching is the final requirement before teacher candidates can earn their degree and license. For this semester, UW-Whitewater is partnering with 223 cooperating teachers across 175 schools in 117 districts.

Student teachers assist cooperating teachers with lesson planning, instruction, and assessment. This fall, 42 UW-Whitewater teacher candidates were hired by school districts as student teaching interns under the Department of Public Instruction’s Wisconsin Improvement Program (WIP). Interns are licensed by DPI to teach up to half of each day independently and receive a stipend for their work during the semester.

UW-Whitewater licenses more teachers than any other institution in Wisconsin. The university’s original mission when founded in 1868 was to educate teachers. More information about its College of Education and Professional Studies can be found at uww.edu/coeps.
