Zach Krakow, a student from Grayslake, Illinois, is serving as a student teacher in Special Education at Mechanics Grove Elementary for the spring 2025 semester. He is currently enrolled in the College of Education and Professional Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Krakow’s placement is part of UW-Whitewater’s program that assigns 179 students to school districts across the region starting in August. Student teaching is required before teacher candidates can earn their degree and license.

During this semester, UW-Whitewater will collaborate with 223 cooperating teachers at 175 schools within 117 districts. Student teachers support lesson planning, instruction, and assessment under the supervision of experienced educators.

This fall, 42 UW-Whitewater teacher candidates were hired as student teaching interns through the Department of Public Instruction’s Wisconsin Improvement Program (WIP). Interns are licensed by DPI to teach up to half of each day independently and receive a stipend for their work.

UW-Whitewater licenses more teachers than any other institution in Wisconsin. The university has focused on educating teachers since its founding in 1868. More information about its College of Education and Professional Studies can be found at uww.edu/coeps.
